The City of Port Angeles is calling for residents to volunteer for a range of advisory boards, commissions, and committees. Community members interested in participating must submit their applications by noon on August 22 to be considered during the first review.

These advisory groups cover topics such as beautification, public safety, and city utilities. Members are appointed by the City Council and serve as volunteers. Each group has its own number of members, responsibilities, and term lengths, which can range from one to four years. Most terms begin on March 1 of the appointment year and end on the last day of February when the term expires. For example, a four-year term starting March 1, 2025, would conclude on February 28, 2029.

Youth participation is also encouraged. Youth Advisors are non-voting members who have the opportunity to contribute their views and learn about city government. Applicants for Youth Advisor positions must be between 14 and 18 years old, live within Port Angeles city limits, and provide written permission from a parent or guardian. Applications for youth positions are reviewed each fall and as needed to fill vacancies.

Currently, there are openings in several advisory groups:

– Civil Service Commission: Three vacancies; investigates law enforcement matters.
– LEOFF 1 Disability Board: Three vacancies; reviews medical claims for LEOFF 1 members.
– Law Enforcement Officer (active or retired LEOFF member from Port Angeles)
– Firefighter (active or retired LEOFF member from Port Angeles)
– Member at Large (must reside within City limits)
– Lodging Tax Advisory Committee: Three vacancies including two seats and one youth advisor; makes recommendations on lodging tax revenue spending.
– Tax Collector
– Member-at-Large
– Youth Advisor
– Parks, Recreation and Facilities Commission: One vacancy for a general seat (must reside within City limits); advises on parks and recreation issues.
– Public Safety Advisory Board: Two vacancies including one general seat (must reside within City limits) and one youth advisor; advises on public safety services.
– Utility Advisory Committee: Three vacancies including two seats (Industrial Customer Representative and Citizen-at-Large) and one youth advisor; provides input on utility policy.

Residents can apply online through the City of Port Angeles website at www.cityofpa.us/advisorygroups. A kiosk is available at City Hall for those wishing to submit applications in person. Interested individuals should review eligibility requirements before applying.

Applications received by noon on August 22 will be included in the first review round. This timeline allows both the Sub-committee and Council sufficient time to consider applicants ahead of potential action scheduled for September 2.

For more information or assistance with the application process, community members can contact the City Clerk’s Office.
