The Clallam County commissioners have made provisions for an extended lease for the Port of Port Angeles that will keep a social-distancing homeless shelter in operation.

The county officials have extended the four-month lease for the 1010 building located in the William R. Fairchild International Airport area. Without the extension, the lease would have expired by the end of this month, Peninsula Daily News reported.

The shelter houses about 50 people who are homeless. The shelter also has an isolation section for those showing symptoms of COVID-19, the news agency reported. The shelter is staffed with individuals and professionals that are provided by the Olympic Community Action Programs (OlyCAP).

“It makes sense to sit down with the Port and with OlyCAP and with other partners to discuss an extension of that lease at a minimum through the end of October,” Commissioner Mark Ozias told Peninsula Daily News. “Ideally, it would be important to understand their willingness to extend into at least the end of the first quarter and potentially the end of the second quarter of next year.”
