Washington State’s new ballot postage rule has placed large counties on equal footing with rural areas.

Last month, Secretary of State Kim Wyman issued an order for all county officials to use First Class mail some two weeks before Election Day when sending ballots to voters in October, Peninsula Daily News reported.

Wyman said she would be working closely with the state’s 39 county election officials on the new rule.

“Closer to Election Day, many counties throughout Washington already switch over to First Class mail to ensure voters receive materials with enough time to cast their ballots,” the Republican official said in a written statement obtained by Peninsula Daily News. “This will provide more consistency statewide and give voters some peace of mind heading into the Nov. 3 General Election.”

Clallam and Jefferson counties use First Class mail for ballots after most are bulk-processed in the first mail run, the publication reported.
