Clallam County is dedicating additional resources to maintaining an isolation and quarantine facility for homeless individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19.
The COVID-19 Social Distancing Center would remain open at least through next spring under plans recently reached by the County Commissioners, according to coverage by the Sequim Gazette. The temporary housing facility near William R. Fairchild International Airport has been averaging 50-to-55 individuals staying there every night.
“I don’t think that it’s acceptable just not having a plan, and turning people out into the cold is not an acceptable option,” Commissioner Mark Ozias was quoted as saying by the Gazette.
The county currently pays $90,850 to operate the center each month, including the lease for the buildings, according to the Gazette. The facility has been operating since April, and the $433,368 grant from the state used to operate it has been exhausted.
However, the county is seeking an extension on the $1.5 million in federal CARES Act funding it received, which otherwise must be expended by the end of the year.
