City of Port Angeles issued the following announcement on Dec. 23.
For 16 hours on December 21, 2020 the City of Port Angeles was on-track to experience a 100-year 24-hour storm event. The storm lasted several days, but on Monday, at least 2.95 inches of rain fell in Port Angeles. Two-thirds of the total rainfall was in an 8-hour time span between 6AM and 2PM, with the peak at 11:53 AM when approximately 1/3” per hour fell.
At the peak of this event, the Wastewater infrastructure was overwhelmed by the extraordinary rainfall volume. All available storage in the City’s 5-million gallon Combined Sewer Overflow tank was filled to capacity. As a result, the City experienced the first significant combined sewer overflow (CSO) event since September 2016 with a preliminary estimate of 1,487,000 gallons of combined rain and sewer discharged from permitted CSO outfalls.
We understand that some property owners may have been affected by this event. We apologize for any disruption in service and thank you for your patience as crews worked to relieve the heavy system strain as a result of this extreme weather event.
